How has my life changed when my husband began to sit at home with a child

“We never planned that Dylan would be sitting at home with the child.

In the early years of our parenthood, I worked part-time: I was a social worker, a researcher, and the mother of two boys — now 7-year-old Ashland and 9-year-old Wiles. However, my work required me to spend 20 hours a week, and in parallel I had to go to the hospital with the children and collect the brakes.

At the same time, Dylan worked as a creative director at a company in New York, two hours from our Beacon. Every day he spent 4 hours on the train. He constantly disappeared at work. Because of this, there have been many quarrels. We were tired, overworked and unhappy.

We both worked, and very hard, but we could not work together. Then, three years later, when the children were 4 and 6, Dylan was fired from his job. Fortunately, at the same time, my company expanded and I was offered a new leadership role with moreresponsibility and employment. So we decided that Dylan would stay at home with the children, and I would work full time.

We had a lot of mixed feelings about these changes. On the one hand, change is always hard. I was sorry to spend less time with the boys, even with a big salary, but we knew that our budget would still be less than when we worked together. On the other hand, it gave Dylan an amazing opportunity to spend more time with the children and strengthen relationships with them. None of us grew up in a family where parents would devote themselves so fully to us, because we appreciated this opportunity in our family. Plus, what woman does not dream to shift all the chores to her husband?

But at first everything was just as hard. Instead of relaxing, the tension was increasing. We dispersed like ships at sea: I went to work when we were still asleep, and came when everyone was already asleep. I was very passionate about work and wanted to give myself to her completely, but the children missed me.

And it turned out to be harder for me to let go of all my previous parental responsibilities. We have a different parenting style with Dylan, like any other couple.

We understood that something needs to be changed again. So we started spending more time with the whole family, I arranged my schedule so that I could work a few days from home, which really helped us a lot. Dylan started freelancing and this helped our budget. Now he does most of the chores and as for the children, and I do this on the weekends. So we became a well-coordinated team, and not just on the principle of "divide and conquer."

Honestly, I have become much happier, knowing that I do not need to think at work about school uniforms for children. This reduced my stress, and in turn made us both happier. Plus, Dylan really got involved in homework. He was all organized and harmoniously.

And it was very sexy. But now we are preparing for change again. Dylan is looking for a full time job. We would like one salary enough for living, but, unfortunately, this is unrealistic. Because of the modest budget, we had to transfer the boys to another school. However, the time when Dylan was at home with them was much more rewarding than any work.

Ideally, at a new job, Dylan should have a flexible schedule so that he can spend time with children.Or maybe I will have to move away a bit from work. When you are a parent, you always do what is necessary.

Fortunately, in the three years that Dylan was sitting with the children, they made us very happy. He became closer to them, and as a result, we, as a family and as a couple, became stronger. We do not know what will happen next, and Dylan is already upset that he will have less to see with the children. No matter how he does his job, Dylan says that being a father, sitting at home with children is the best job he has ever had. ”
