In Finland, newborns sleep in boxes

For 75 years, Finnish women who are preparing to become mothers, receive from the state a box with things for the baby. The Finnish authorities believe that these boxes have helped the state to significantly reduce the infant mortality rate.

The main goal of the tradition of giving boxes of things to young mothers is to give all children of the country, regardless of their origin, equal opportunities at the very beginning of life.

The baby box contains baby clothes, a sleeping bag, bathing accessories, diapers, bed linen, and a small mattress. If you put this mattress in the box, it turns into a cozy cot. Many children from all segments of the population spend the first weeks of their lives in a box with a mattress.

“Box for baby” is an integral part of the care of the Finnish state about young mothers and babies

This box is meant for every mother. Women have a choice: take a box or cash aid (140 euros).95% of mothers choose the box, as the things that are included in it cost much more than 140 euros.

The tradition of giving such boxes to newborns appeared in 1938. Initially, the box was intended only for low-income families, but in 1949 they began to give boxes to absolutely all mothers. But in order to receive such a box, a woman had to undergo a mandatory examination by a doctor in the first trimester of pregnancy. Thus, the sets not only provided women with everything they needed for the baby for the first time, but also “sent” mothers to doctors.

Today, the “box for a baby” is an integral part of the care of the Finnish state about young mothers and babies, this tradition has united whole generations of women.
