Leptospirosis in children: sources of infection, treatment, prevention

A pediatrician will tell you why leptospirosis occurs and how to avoid it.

Continuing the theme, which occur more often in the summer, today we will talk about leptospirosis. This disease is not frequent, but periodically in Ukraine there are epidemic outbreaks. Adults get sick more often, less often - children, mostly of school age.

Causative agent of leptospirosis- pathogenic leptospira, which mainly affect wild and domestic animals, less often - humans.

Source of infection- wild and domestic animals excreting leptospir with urine. A person becomes infected through infected water, soil, vegetables, fruits and other food. A sick person is not contagious and not dangerous to others.

Maintransmission route- water: when drinking contaminated water, bathing in non-flowing water bodies, as well as contact with sick animals.Leptospira penetrate the human body through the mucous membrane of the digestive tract. Leptospira may enter through damaged skin and mucous membranes. It is unfavorable in this respect to swim in stagnant water bodies, especially where visitors leave a lot of food waste on the shore (because it attracts rats, which are often a source of infection).

Symptoms of leptospirosis

Suspicion of leptospirosis should arise if it is known about the contact of the child with sick animals, bathing in stagnant water bodies, drinking unboiled water and raw milk. Animals most often tolerate leptospirosis in a manifest form, with darkening of the urine being one of the characteristic symptoms of the disease.

Leptospirosis occurs in twoclinical forms- anicteric and icteric. Both forms begin acutely with fever. High body temperature lasts up to a week, often accompanied by chills and headache. A typical sign of leptospirosis in humans is pain in the muscles, especially the gastrocnemius. Sometimes nausea and vomiting with blood, nasal bleeding, delirium, insomnia. At the height of the disease (3-6 days), a small rash may appear in the form of spots or hemorrhages on the trunk and extremities. The rash lasts from several hours to several days, after which it gradually disappears.

In some patients, symptoms of irritation of the meninges, disorders of the eyes are determined. Leptospirosis is characterized by kidney damage, including kidney failure.
